As pro-life people, we know that the preborn child is truly present within his mother's body from the first cell onward. There is no point throughout a woman's pregnancy when a child is not really and truly present.

As Catholic pro-life people, we know that Christ is truly present--body, blood, soul, and divinity--in the Eucharist. There is no point after the host is consecrated by the priest when Christ is not truly present.

This understanding is why the reception of the Eucharist is such a blessing, but it is also why a Catholic who is aware of his or her own grave sin should not receive this sacrament.

When we focus our attention on the Catholic Code of Canon Law, specifically Canon 915, we do so with the intention of holding accountable those who refuse to respect these truths. Canon 915 reads: "Those who have been excommunicated or interdicted after the imposition or declaration of the penalty and others obstinately persevering in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to Holy Communion."
