In the practice of "cafeteria Catholicism" one chooses the doctrines or teachings he likes and disregards the others he does not like. One chooses those which may be convenient for him or which agree with his feelings, opinions, or understanding. He does not buy the whole package. It is like ordering coffee without the sugar or salad without the mayonnaise. This kind of attitude may work well when it comes to choosing what to eat but it becomes absurd when transferred to the realm of practicing one's faith.
We cannot possess joy. It possesses us. We are in it. And there are not many joyful people around, because many do not know where the key to joy can be found. But the key to a life of joy is to relinquish the pursuit of happiness.
Hospitality is among the most ancient of human traditions. On the most basic level, it's about providing the essentials of life for another person, especially another person who's on a journey. Food, water and a roof over the head: the essentials.
If you have ever been surprised by the sudden appearance of in-laws at the door of your home, you know that hospitality can be a burden. If we never had to serve another turkey dinner or grill steaks on the barbie for guests, it would not bother us in the least. Yet, at some point, we cannot get away from the fact that Jesus encourages us to be welcoming. Fine. Does that mean anything more than simply being polite?
