A wise man said, "The rains feed the river, the river feeds the trees along its banks, the trees produce fruits and feed people. Whom do people feed?"
Think of the company that we are destined to keep in heaven: not only our relatives, our grandparents and great grandparents and theirs, but all who have gone before us, the great saints, the great popes, the great martyrs who fought valiantly and who underwent tremendous suffering for Christ and whose lives were far more difficult than ours are today, and who faced far more ominous threats. We have to live our lives in such a way that in their mighty company, and in the company of Christ the King, we shall not be ashamed.
What is striking about this tale of sheep and goats is that neither of them know Jesus. Neither sheep nor goats recognize him when he comes to them.
This Parable of the Sheep and the Goats is seen by many - in church and out - as a veritable "clobber passage," demanding a commitment to one understanding or another of social justice. But this passage has as much - or more - to do with mercy as it does with justice.
