Brian V. Johnstone, C.SS.R. is a professor of moral theology at the Alfonsian Accademy, of the Lateran University, Rome, Italy, where he has taught since 1987. He gained a doctorate in theology from the University of Leuven Belgium. Dr. Johnstone was previously associate professor at the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. He is a native of Australia. He has published numerous articles on Bioethics, Peace and War and Fundamental Moral Theology.

The Status of the Human Embryo: Catholic Teaching and the Role of Reason.

The basic point at issue between those who accept abortion and those who reject it, is the status of the embryo and, in particular, whether it should be acknowledged to be a person or not. It is by examining the kind of reasoning which is employed by either side in this controversy that we can discern what "reason" actually means in the debate.
