Dear Jerry,
As we gather across the globe to remember the first use of nuclear weapons in warfare against Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we must keep our eyes focused on the future - and making sure that no community ever suffers the harms of nuclear weapons again.
We are looking ahead to the first ever Review Conference on the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in November and December. This is not just another UN meeting, it is an extraordinary opportunity to focus our expectations - and demand that leaders everywhere in the world do better.
Nuclear weapons are in the news, nuclear threats are on the rise and we are living in a dangerous time. The recognition of this danger, and that no one is safe as long as nuclear weapons exist, brought governments to negotiate the TPNW. Now, five years after the treaty went into effect, a majority of countries have joined it and their governments are coming to the UN to review it.
I'm challenging all of us to make this the most meaningful moment in nuclear weapons history ever.
This Review needs to go beyond a bureaucratic assessment of unfulfilled rhetoric. It needs to show that we're delivering on the plan we agreed in Vienna - to increase the number of countries in the treaty and the campaign supporting it, to build evidence and understanding, and to deliver nuclear justice.
Working closely with governments, international organisations and colleagues across civil society we are planning a week-long conference and dozens of events creating opportunities to strengthen the opposition against nuclear weapons and move closer to their elimination.
