Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently told Congress that the United Nations has "lost its purpose" and "lost its mission" by promoting abortion through international family planning programs.
During testimony on the Trump administration's proposed 2027 foreign affairs budget, Rubio sharply criticized the UN and affiliated organizations for spending hundreds of millions of dollars on what he described as abortion advocacy under the guise of family planning.
He said the United States will no longer participate in such efforts.
"The government of the United States is not going to be involved in distributing contraceptives and all these other things around the world," Rubio stated.
Rubio noted that for many years it has been nearly impossible to separate family planning programs from abortion in U.S. foreign aid. The administration's budget proposal reflects a deliberate shift away from such funding, with no money allocated to the UN Population Fund or the World Health Organization.
